Measure the freight as it will be shipped, including its pallet or packaging. State the units, total weight and whether the pieces can be stacked. Identify anything fragile, temperature-sensitive or difficult to load.
Explain whether both locations have loading docks. Include tailgate requirements, residential or limited-access locations, inside delivery, driver assistance and any additional stops.
For cross-border freight, identify the lane and confirm who will arrange the required documentation and clearance. Do not assume that a transportation bid includes every cross-border charge or service.

A shipment price reflects more than distance. Giving carriers accurate information helps them evaluate the equipment, time and work involved.
Lane & truck position
Origin, destination and where a suitable truck is available can affect the offer. The carrier also considers the work involved in reaching the pickup and completing the lane.
Size, weight & equipment
Trailer space, payload, stackability and equipment requirements shape the job. A palletised dry shipment and a temperature-controlled load should not be priced as if their requirements were identical.
Timing & service scope
Urgency, fixed appointments, multiple stops and additional handling change the assignment. Identify the real deadline and any flexibility instead of leaving the carrier to assume.
Changes after quoting
Additional freight, different dimensions or a revised delivery point can change the work. Tell the carrier about changes and reconfirm the terms before the shipment moves.

Are the quotes in Canadian or U.S. dollars?
Confirm the currency of each offer with the carrier, particularly for cross-border freight. Do not compare two amounts as if they use the same currency without checking.
Does a quote include fuel and additional services?
Ask what the offer includes. Confirm fuel charges, appointments, tailgate service, waiting time and any other requested work before award. Inclusion depends on the agreed terms.
Can I request LTL, truckload or cross-border offers?

Is the lowest bid always the best choice?
