Canadian freight guide

Freight Shipping in Canada: From Shipment Details to Delivery

Freight shipping works better when the commodity, lane, equipment, timing and responsibilities are clear before the truck is booked.

This guide explains how businesses, freight brokers and carriers can plan truck freight in Canada and on supported Canada–U.S. lanes, and how a load board can connect available freight with transportation capacity.

Start with shipment facts.

No technology can make an incomplete shipment automatically suitable for a carrier. Accurate origin, destination, commodity, equipment and timing information remains the foundation of freight shipping.

Freight shipping basics

What is freight shipping?

Freight shipping is the commercial transportation of goods, materials, machinery or other cargo between locations. Truck freight may move locally, regionally, between provinces, across Canada or between Canada and the United States.

The transportation method depends on the actual shipment. A palletized retail shipment may use a dry van, temperature-sensitive food may need a reefer, machinery may require open-deck equipment, and smaller shipments may move as less-than-truckload freight.

The important decision is not which category sounds right. It is whether the equipment and carrier can safely and legally perform the real movement.

Common truck equipment

Match the freight to the transportation equipment

Dry van

Enclosed trailer freight such as many packaged, palletized, manufacturing and retail shipments.

Reefer

Temperature-controlled transportation for commodities requiring specified temperature conditions.

Flatbed

Open-deck transportation for freight suited to side, top or crane loading and appropriate securement.

Step deck

Open-deck equipment that can accommodate certain taller loads while remaining subject to dimensions and route requirements.

LTL

Smaller freight shipments sharing trailer capacity where less than a full truckload is required.

Specialized freight

Oversize, bulk, tanker, power-only and other movements may require specific equipment, qualifications or permits.

Before transportation is sourced

Build a freight-shipping record carriers can evaluate

  • Origin and destination: exact cities, facilities, stops and relevant access instructions.
  • Commodity: what is moving and how it is packaged.
  • Weight and dimensions: actual shipment measurements when relevant to equipment and legality.
  • Equipment: trailer or truck type and any configuration requirements.
  • Pickup and delivery: appointments, windows and known flexibility.
  • Special requirements: temperature, securement, border, permits, regulated cargo or facility conditions.

Load-board workflow

From freight requirement to an awarded truck

  1. 1

    Post the freight

Enter enough shipment information for carriers to understand the complete transportation requirement.

  2. 2

    Review responses

Compare transportation offers against the same lane, equipment, timing and service scope.

  3. 3

    Verify and award

Complete your carrier-selection process and agree on the commercial terms before awarding the movement.

  4. 4

    Manage delivery

Keep communication, tracking and relevant shipment documents connected through completion.

After award

Freight shipping continues after a carrier is selected

1

Dispatch

Confirm the driver, equipment, pickup details and operational contacts.

2

Communication

Keep changes to appointments, instructions or shipment requirements visible to the appropriate parties.

3

Tracking

Use shipment visibility tools to follow active freight when tracking is enabled.

4

Documents

Keep relevant BOLs, PODs, photos and other transportation files connected to the movement.

Canada–U.S. freight

Cross-border freight shipping requires additional planning

Freight crossing the Canada–U.S. border should be planned as an international shipment from the beginning. The appropriate parties need to confirm customs information, carrier authority, driver eligibility, documentation and commodity-specific requirements.

Logistware can support freight discovery and transportation coordination, but customs clearance and government requirements remain outside the load board. Use current CBSA, CBP, customs-broker and other authoritative information for the actual movement.

Where Logistware fits

Use one load board from freight discovery through active shipment management

Logistware connects carriers, shippers and freight brokers around available freight and truck capacity. Members can post freight or trucks, review opportunities, bid on loads and continue with shipment communication, tracking and document exchange after award.

The load board supports the transportation workflow; it does not automatically choose the correct carrier, guarantee the lowest rate, predict every disruption or replace the professional judgment of the businesses moving the freight.

Common questions

Freight Shipping FAQ

What information do I need to ship freight?

Start with the origin, destination, commodity, weight, dimensions, equipment requirement, pickup and delivery timing, and any special handling or operating conditions.

What is the difference between FTL and LTL freight?

Full truckload generally uses the truck or trailer for one shipment, while less-than-truckload transportation combines smaller freight shipments within available trailer capacity.

Can I post freight in Canada through Logistware?

Yes. Shippers and freight brokers can post Canadian freight so participating carriers can evaluate the opportunity.

Can carriers find freight?

Yes. Carriers can post available trucks and review member-posted freight that fits their equipment, location and operating lanes.

Can Logistware be used for Canada–U.S. freight?

Supported cross-border freight can be posted. The appropriate parties remain responsible for customs, authority and other international shipment requirements.
